Just 7 kilometres from the ocean in the prime Helderberg region of Stellenbosch, the 48 hectare Anwilka estate produces what Robert Parker deems “the finest red wine I have ever had from South Africa”. The significant maritime influence in the Helderberg region guarantees exceptional fruit quality, and the matching of grape varieties to specific sites was carefully considered.
Purchased in the 1990s by the previous owner of Klein Constantia, with Hubert de Boüard of Château Angélus and Bruno Prats formerly of Cos d’Estournel, the estate has been extensively replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot. The eponymous maiden vintage was released in 2005 with a Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon blend.
Anwilka merged with Klein Constantia in 2012, and attention has been focused on establishing it as a global South African wine brand. In the Bordeaux model, a second wine from the Estate known as Petit Frère has been introduced to set a new benchmark in quality for South African wine.
